Intelligent strain gauging

Advanced strain gauging technology helps to ease component load analysis and reduce demand on track and performance engineers.

Understanding the effect of forces acting upon key components is an area where the correct use of sensors brings valuable gains. Texense has significant expertise in this area, having 20 years of experience working with strain gauging different materials such as steel, carbon fiber, aluminum and titanium used for pushrods, drive shafts, input shafts, strut tops and forks.

This experience was truly put to the test with Porsche’s 919 tribute project. Texense worked closely with Porsche engineers to help bring the project to life. Strain gauging a multitude of components all crucial for the incredible 5:19 Nürburgring lap.

The company’s strain gauge installation relies on its proprietary XN4 digitally controlled intelligent amplifier, and its sequential thermal compensation/calibration cycle process, is unique and aims to minimize the demands placed on track and performance engineers. “With our XN4 amplifiers, the calibration data is coded and stored within the part, allowing for significantly less input from the track electronics team when parts are changed; no new calibration data needs to be entered,” Texys UK business manager Jason Mowle explains. The system also provides the team with a clear method to interrogate the gauged parts and identify any potential accident or over-load events by storing and displaying any offset shift, which is read through a supplied switch-box or via a simple Hyper Terminal connection.

Texense has recently extended its strain gauging facility, doubling its capacity, and has also invested in the very latest Instron tension/compression calibration equipment. The new machinery allows the company to preload automated test programs, which improves workflow, while offering a higher accuracy of ±0.5%. Together, these improvements have enabled Texense to streamline its strain gauge installations and provide clients with a quicker turnaround, vital for motorsport teams rushing to be ready for a race weekend.
