Rubore® Washer for Automotive Applications

Find out how corrosion of electronics and electrical components can be avoided

General

The automotive industry is well-known for the strict safety requirements which are continuously being updated. They aim to assure the reliability of all the components and therefore avoiding any risks during the driving experience.

This, together with the electrification trend we are experiencing, means that the overall presence of sensors and controllers ensuring the proper functionality of our vehicle.

Corrosion is a big enemy to all the electronics and electrical components, and it could lead to a system failure. Therefore, it is crucial to prevent it from reaching the electrical and electronic components in the vehicle.

Within Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, we have developed a washer protecting components from galvanic corrosion, that can happen when two different metals are in contact (i.e. a bolt and a housing).

Furthermore, it will protect components within the housing from ambient moisture, which can also lead to issues with electronics.

In TSS we have a specific laminate material, developed in our facility in Kalmar (Sweden): Rubore®. It is a three layers laminate, rubber-metal-rubber. Due to the specific production process, this is securing an extreme high bonding force and ensures the durability of the material properties.

The Rubore® Washer can be stamped out in a big variety of material combinations, thicknesses and diameters.

Product benefits

• Material choice adapted for each environment. Together with our customer we will evaluate the material combination that adapts best to the application.

• The elasticity of the rubber layers seal a range of surface roughness or extremely small holes, preventing microleakage.

• Material thicknesses to be chosen depending on the application. We can produce for example a washer with 1mm thickness

     o 2 x 0.15mm  EPDM layers

     o 1 x 0,7mm  Aluminum layer

• Rubore® has successfully completed a 1000h Thermal Cycle test with additional pressure pulsations (-40°C – 150°C)

Case example: Battery application

The battery cover of an electric vehicle is usually having a lot of bolts assuring a closing force and where corrosion is absolutely to be avoided. Avoiding the direct contact between the bolts and the cover is important to avoid corrosion or moisture reaching inner component.

Our engineering team will advice you, for choosing the solution that fits your application.
